Ubuntu on a bootable USB flash drive recognizing different network interfaces
I have created a USB flash drive (a 'stick') with 12.04 LTS desktop. I built this using guidelines for creating a 'try ubuntu/install ubuntu'' on a USB and then I went a stage further and installed 12.04 ... but not onto the local HDD, but onto another 32Gb USB (which should be big enough for my personal Ubuntu educational resource, I figure).
My goal is a USB with a fully configured Ubuntu desktop (and over time with my own customizations e.g. Samba, Tomcat, SSH, etc) that I can plug into almost any machine and boot up to run as my Ubuntu 12.04.
It works fine on the laptop that I originally built the bootable USB on. It recognizes both the ethernet interface and wireless.
However, when I try to boot using a different netbook with the bootable 12.04 USB, although it boots up OK, it doesn't see any network interfaces ... I've run thru the whole of 'lshw' 'nm-tool' 'iwconfig' etc etc. The best that I can see on the netbook is that the ethernet and the wireless interface are UNCLAIMED.
If I boot the same netbook with the 'try ubuntu/install ubuntu' USB, and then 'try Ubuntu' it works fine. So I think there must be something not configured or loaded when I use my 'run anywhere' Ubuntu' USB.
I hope I am not being too lazy asking for help, as there seem to be a LOT of questions here about almost similar problems. But none quite fits mine. And I suspect there may be an easy workaround!
